Then.....
This room has been re-plastered and painted, and I have installed a new dual pane, double hung window and replaced the old double doors leading to the porch with a pair of fifteen pane glass doors. 
Door leading to the small shower room off the guest bedroom.  This remains, essentially, unchanged since we moved in.  We have new chrome fixtures, faucets, lights, towel rails and the rest, and they should be fitted by the end of the summer, 2010.

The first picture is the downstairs main guest room untouched.  To the right is a detail of the horrific treatment our predecessor gave to the door leading to the shower room off the bedroom.  The main entry door matched.  It was not just the gold paint, but the totally inept way that it was applied.  He made no attempt to make clean borders between the gold and white paint, and had applied only one coat so it was uneven and patchy.  Needless to say, I have repainted them in white.
