Whale Watching
On one of our trips we saw a school of dolphins.
Out & back on the 2010 whale watch. While we did not see any whales, it was a wonderful trip in sunny, though chilly, weather. The boat went out much further into the Atlantic than we had on previous trips. The boat uses a water jet rather than propellers so it does not harm either marine life or the myriad traps of the lobster men that seem completely to fill the bay.
The end of the trip as our boat, the Friendship V, sails into her mooring in Bar Harbor.
We have been out on whale watches a number of times on the 112 foot long catamaran the Friendship V. In truth, it is very hard to take pictures of whales as one never knows quite where they will surface. On later trips, we concentrated on looking and left the camera behind. This is one of a very few pictures I did manage to get.
Seals basking in the sun at the far end of the island on which stands Mount Desert Rock light.
The whale watch in June, 2011. We were very lucky to see this the first Humpback whale of the season. It certainly made the day for the on-board naturalist! This is a collage of a number of pictures we managed to take. We also saw a number of nesting puffins on this trip, but they were too far away for photographs.
