Vacations - Maine - Kittery, York & Wells Area
In 2011, we visited the area around Kittery, the Yorks, and Wells, which is in the south of coastal Maine near the border with New Hampshire. We stayed in the York Harbor Inn, not surprisingly it is in York Harbor overlooking the ocean, in part because we have seen it on previous visits, and we had a discount coupon to stay there. Thus we spent two rather luxurious nights for not too much money. But then, we splurged on their restaurant!
This part of Maine has some of the oldest settlements that were once part of Massachusetts. York became a Royal Colony in 1641 making it the oldest chartered city in America. Freeport is called "The Birthplace of Maine" because it was in Jameson Tavern that the idea of seceding from Massachusetts to form a new state began.
So far, most of this section is devoted to the "Yorks", with a brief visit to Kittery. We shall visit the other areas around here too over the next few years and add more.
