Lighthouses

Here is a series of views of the Cape Neddick or "The Nubble", as it is also known.  The lighthouse is the original 41 foot tall tower built in 1879.  It is made of cast iron, and is lined with bricks.  It was electrified in 1938, and automated in 1987.  After having been damaged, the fourth-order Fresnel Lens was replaced with another from a different lighthouse in 1928, and this remains in use today, not having been upgraded with an aerobeacon.  A photograph of The Nubble was included on the Voyager 2 spacecraft launched in 1977.

The lighthouse is actually about 90 meters (100 yards) off the mainland on Nubble Island.  It is not possible to visit the lighthouse, but good views are available from Cape Neddick Point,  which is at the north end of Long Sands Beach in the village of York Beach.
