Vacations -
Lighthouses
Here is a series of views of the Castle Hill lighthouse taken on our trip to Newport in October 2011. This is the original lighthouse that was built in 1890 and remains operational today. It is only 34 feet high, and seems to be built directly into the cliff face. Fitted originally with a 5th order Fresnel lens, with a kerosene lamp, it now uses a modern optic that shows a red light. This was fitted when the light was automated in 1957. Although not sign posted, it is accessible from the path at the far end of the car park of the Castle Hill Inn.
Castle Hill Lighthouse,
Newport RI
Leaving the car park of the Castle Hill Inn, you walk along the cliff, then down through a wooded area until the first sighting of the lighthouse sitting low down the cliff. The steps leading down to the lighthouse are exposed to the strong winds making the descent a little nerve racking.
The rocks to the side of the lighthouse caught the sun beautifully on the day we visited.
You can find a great deal of information about how the lighthouse came, eventually, to get built and see many more photographs at the Lighthouse Friends website.
View of the lighthouse looking across Narragansett bay from Fort Wetherill on Conanicut Island; about 1.6 km (1 mile) away. Taken on February 15th, 2012.
