Dice Head Lighthouse, ME

The present Dice Head Lighthouse went into operation in 1829.  There is also a keepers cottage right next to it.  The tower is some 42 feet tall, and showed a fixed white light.  In1858, a Fourth order Fresnel was installed.  A barn was added in 1888, and an oil house in 1895, both of which remain.

Throughout its life, it was criticized for having been built in the wrong place for its intended purpose, and as early as 1857 consideration was given to discontinuing the light.  However, it continued in use right up to 1935.  In 1858, substantial repairs were carried out including covering the tower with a wooden sheath that was not removed until the end of the 19th century.  Also in 1858, a fourth-order Fresnel lens was installed.

After 1935, the lighthouse was switched off and a basic "skeleton" tower was installed near the shore.  Major repairs were performed through 1997 and 1998.  In 2007, a storm destroyed the skeleton tower, so the Coast Guard decided to re-instate the Dice Head.  They installed a new optic in the lighthouse, a 250 mm FA-250 with acrylic Fresnel lens made by Automatic Power Inc.  It went back into service on January 1, 2008, showing a white light flashing at 6 second intervals.
