Lighthouses

Saugerties Light, Saugerties, NY

To reach the lighthouse, there is a delightful walk along a nature trail that offers excellent views along the Hudson River.  There are several additional photographs of the river in Saugerties in the main vacation section under Hudson Valley, the Catskills & East New York.
Built in 1869, in the Italianate style, to replace an earlier 1838 lighthouse, it has been run by the Saugerties Lighthouse Conservancy since 1986. Interestingly, they run it both as a small museum, displaying items from the lighthouses and details of the restoration, and a bed and breakfast with just two rooms. 
The llighthouse was fitted with a sixth order Fresnel lens, and it was automated in 1954.  Since 1990, it has used a solar powered led lamp.
