West Quoddy Head
Lighthouse, Lubec, ME
West Quoddy Head Lighthouse is in Lubec, Maine, and is the furthest point east in the United States. The first lighthouse was built in 1808, and remained until the current tower was built in 1858. We planned to visit it on our 2010 trip up to Maine, but extremely bad weather changed our plans, and we only got as far as Machias, which is about 30 miles away, so these are not original photographs . Although we have not seen it, I have included it as we ALMOST got there, and it is so attractive! Hopefully we will visit Lubec soon, and be able to provide some original pictures. The current tower was built in 1857, and a third-order Fresnel lens was fitted in 1858, which remains in use today, albeit with a modern lamp. There was a major restoration in 2004 that included replacing the lost gargoyles that had acted as drain spouts! The grounds are open to the public, and there is a visitors center and museum.
