Views of Gibraltar and the harbor taken from near the entrance to the caves. In the second picture, you can see our ship near the center.
The Barbary Apes, or more correctly Macaques, are actually tail-less monkeys. I am told they are the only wild monkeys in Europe.
Natives of North Africa, they were imported as pets, or even game for shooting practice, by British soldiers in the mid-18th century.
The Ibrahim-al-Ibrahim Mosque is at the southern tip of Gibraltar, at Europa Point. It was a gift from King Fahd of Saudi Arabia, and was opened in 1997.

It was believed that St. Michael's cave is one end of a subterranean passage under the Strait of Gibraltar to Morocco. Legend has it that this is how the Barbary Macaques reached Gibraltar from Morocco. The Rock of Gibraltar is thought to be one of the legendary “Pillars of Hercules”, and the Ancient Greeks believed the cave be the “Gates of Hades”.
The lighthouse at Europa Point was built between 1838 and 1841, and it was fully automated in February 1994. It is the only lighthouse outside the U.K. for which Trinity House has responsibility.
