Initially, Morgan Lewis studied law but suspended studying to participate in the Revolutionary War. He achieved the rank of Colonel. Later, he became Attorney General for the State of New York, then Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of New York before serving as governor between 1804 and 1807.

In 1832, Morgan Lewis and his wife, Gertrude Livingston, built a house on the site to replace an earlier house that had been destroyed by fire. It was a "modest" 25 room mansion in the Greek Revival style.

Ruth Livingston had married Ogden Mills, and inherited the house. They decided that the house was too small, and did not adequately reflect their immense wealth, so had it rebuilt as a 65 room Beaux-Arts mansion. This is the house we see today.

Gladys Mills Phipps gave the house with 192 acres of property to the State of New York in 1938. It is now part of the Mills-Norrie State Park together with the adjoining Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park .
