Isaac Bell House, Newport, RI
Completed in 1883, The Isaac Bell House, was built by Isaac Bell, Jr. a cotton broker and investor.  It was also known as the Edna Villa.  Vincent J. Scully described it as a masterpiece of the Shingle Style, which he referred to as "the first modern American style" in his 1952 book, The Shingle Style.

It had also suffered conversion into condominiums until the Preservation Society of Newport County purchased it in 1994 and opened it to the public as a museum after an award winning restoration.

De La Salle

De La Salle was built for William Gordon Weld II in 1884. From 1924 to 1972, it was used as part of a private boy's school, the De La Salle Academy  The academy having closed in 1972, it suffered the ignominy of conversion into condominiums.  At least it was not demolished!
