Visit:

The Breakers

One of the most famous of the cottages, The Breakers was the summer home of Cornelius Vanderbilt II.  It has 70-rooms in 65,000 square feet (c. 6,150 square meters) of living space.  Completed in 1895, it cost more than $7 million; the equivalent of about $180 million today.  The center piece of the house is the Great Hall.  It was considered the largest, most opulent house in Newport.  In 1948  the Preservation Society of Newport County leased the property from Vanderbilt's heir the Countess Gladys Széchenyi, finally purchasing it in 1972.  The family retained rights to the third floor, which is not open to the public. Vanderbilt's great-grandchildren, continue to use it in summer.  It is the most popular attraction in Rhode Island.
