Rosecliff

Construction of Rosecliff, built for Theresa Fair Oelrichs, started in 1899 and was not completed until 1902.  The main architect was Stanford White, who apparently modeled it after the Grand Trianon of Versailles but with a second main floor, and on a simplified and much smaller scale.  The house also has a third floor, mainly given over to servant's quarters, which is set back and hidden by the balustrade above the second floor.  The Oelrichs sold the house and most of the contants in 1941, and the Monroe family bought it in in 1947.

In contrast to the
Oelrichs' extremely formal style, the Monroes held elaborate, but relaxed, parties.  The Monroes donated the house to the Preservation Society of Newport County in 1971.  The contents of the house today are mainly from the Monroe era.  Parts of both the Great Gatsby and True Lies were filmed here, as well as The Betsy, High Society and Amistad.
