Connecticut Borders 1636-1676
The Dutch were the first to settle in what is now known as Connecticut, though it was inhabited by the Mohegan tribe prior to colonization. The name came from the Algonquian word "quinatucquet" which means "upon the long river". The first settlement was on the Connecticut River where the Park River joined, at a place they called Dutch Point. Several major British settlements appeared in the 1630s that became the Connecticut Colony, the Saybrook Colony, and the New Haven Colony. It was in 1662 that these three became the Crown Colony of Connecticut. The main cities include Bridgeport, Bristol, Danbury,Greenwich, New Haven, Stamford, and the state capital, Hartford.
Connecticut's borders changed frequently up to around 1776. Click the map to the right to see a full sized map summarizing the ways the boundaries evolved from the various settlements. The state is nicknamed The Constitution State, apparently based on its colonial constitution, implemented between 1638 and 1639, which was the first in America. Among a number of Universities and colleges, the state is home to Yale University, which was established in 1701.
In November 2008, Connecticut became the second state after Massachusetts to permit same-sex marriage, and not repeal the decision (California was the second state but repealed the law in November 2008).
