Vacations - Maine
Usually, we take at least three or four vacations each year, and have visited Maine every year from 2004 up to 2011. While the principle destination has been Bar Harbor, we have enjoyed the whole of the Maine coast from the Yorks in the south right up to Machias, which is as far north as we have been. We plan to go further north to visit the West Quoddy Lighthouse in Lubec and then onto the FDR estate at Campobello. We have also enjoyed several stays in Portland, ME which is a fascinating city. Another reason for traveling around Maine is the lighthouses, which have their own section on the web site.
When we first visited Bar Harbor in Maine in 2004, one of the purposes of the trip was to go out on a whale watch; something that neither of us had done before. We have been on a few since then, though we have not always found whales. We also enjoy the walk along the shore path, Cadillac Mountain and the Seal Cove automobile museum, all of which are documented here.
Portland, Maine, is a very attractive, comfortable town. In 2009, Forbes.com ranked it number one of "America's Most Livable Cities". The English sea captain Christopher Levett started a settlement in the area in 1623, but it was not permanently settled until 1633 when it was called Casco. By 1658, it became known as Falmouth. After the Revolutionary War, a section of Falmouth separated in 1786 and became known as Portland. Between 1820 and 1832, Portland was the capital of the new state of Maine, after which Augusta became the capital.
In 2011, we visited the area around Kittery, the Yorks, and Wells, which is in the south of coastal Maine near the border with New Hampshire. We stayed in the York Harbor Inn, not surprisingly it is in York Harbor overlooking the ocean. We had seen it on previous visits, and found that we had a discount coupon to stay there. Thus we spent two rather luxurious nights for not too much money. But then, we splurged on their restaurant! So far, most of this section is devoted to the "Yorks", with a brief visit to Kittery. We plan to visit the other areas around here in more depth over the next few years.
There are also a number of places where we have stopped briefly over the years, sometimes just passing through, and sometimes staying over. Thus, the "Other Places" section covers these places, and as we find more places, we will add them.
