This section covers the state of New York; our home state.  Of course, most people, especially those from outside the United States, think only of New York City, but the state of New York is nearly 10% larger in area than England, though the population is a little over 19 million, and 8 million of those are in the City!  In the north and west, it borders Canada, including the US side of Niagara Falls.  The state was first settled by the Dutch from about 1609 onwards.  The British took over the territory in 1664.  The name New York comes from the Duke of York who became King James.  New York gained independence in 1776, and became a member state of the USA in 1788.
