New York State
Albany County lies on the west side of the Hudson River and is north-west of where we live in Columbia County.  Part of the northern border comprises the Mohawk River around where it joins the Hudson River.  The county is named for the British Duke of York and of Albany, who was crowned later as James II of England  and James VII of Scotland.  New York Governor Thomas Dongan created Albany County in 1683, and it was confirmed on October 1, 1691.  Originally much larger than it is today, it extended across the Hudson River to the east.  The county was partitioned a number of times up until 230 square miles was given over to creating Schenectady County on March 7, 1809.  Finally, Havre Island  was ceded to Saratoga County on March 3, 1888, leaving Albany County at its current size.

The City of Albany is the largest city in the county, and is the county seat as well as the state capital of New York.
